Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have condemned the proposed trip to Saudi Arabia by some members of the House of Representatives to see President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The Lagos lawmakers said the trip would only amount to waste of money, adding that it would not change the present situation of the president.
Speaking under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, Sanai Agunbiade noted that there was the need to revisit the absence of Yar’Adua from the country, stressing that there was information that some people were planning a pro-Yar’Adua rally.
The lawmaker said a court last week pronounced that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had only 14 days to declare the health status of the president, "but up till now, we are yet to know the situation of things."
Agunbiade said: "We read in the paper that a life support machine is coming ahead of the president. It shows that Yar’Adua is no longer fit to direct the affairs this country. Yar’Adua should just do the right thing by following section 145 of the constitution."
He explained that the FEC must do the right by obeying the recent pronouncement by the court to publicly declare the health status of Yar’Adua.
While contributing, Adefunmilayo Tejuoso wondered why Yar’Adua is afraid of handing over to his Vice. She said "things are happening in the country right now and there is no president to direct the situation. We all know that from day one, he was not strong. It’s not an easy task to direct a nation. Nigerians need to be governed properly and the only thing to do is to allow his Vice to continue".
Rotimi Olowo on his part noted that FEC has failed Nigerians. He pointed out that if Yar’Adua is coming back to rule the country on a machine, "definitely, he is no longer in position to continue. The post of a president is not hereditary, some presidents like George Bush have been in his situation before and they handed over to their Vices," Olowo added.
